In his book Revelation: The Ultimate Hope in Christ, Dr. David Jeremiah highlights one of the central themes of the Book of Revelation: God’s promise of deliverance. This promise is one we can fully rely on, no matter what we face in life. We don’t need to live in fear, anxiety, or bitterness because God has assured us of our deliverance from all pain and suffering. His faithfulness and power to save are certain.
God’s Promise to Abraham: The Foundation of Our Deliverance
The story of God’s deliverance begins with Abraham, whose life and faith set the stage for all of God’s future promises. In Genesis 17, we see God’s covenant with Abraham:
“When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.’ Abram fell face down, and God said to him, ‘As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.’” (Genesis 17:1-8)
Here, God promises that Abraham will be the father of many nations, and through his descendants—specifically his grandson Jacob (later called Israel)—God creates the nation of Israel. This is where the story of God’s deliverance begins.
From this point on, the narrative of Israel becomes the story of God’s redemptive work, which ultimately culminates in the deliverance of all people through Jesus Christ.
The First Deliverance: Israel’s Exodus from Egypt
God’s first major act of deliverance is seen in the story of the Exodus, where He calls Moses to free the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Through a series of miraculous events, God delivers His people from oppression and leads them into the Promised Land. This event foreshadows the ultimate deliverance from sin and death that we find through Christ.
As God brought Israel out of Egypt, He was setting the stage for the coming of Jesus—His Son—who would bring not just physical freedom, but spiritual salvation for all who trust in Him.
Jesus: Our Ultimate Deliverer
Just as God delivered Israel from Egypt, He has provided deliverance through Jesus Christ. In the Gospel of John, we see Jesus pointing to His own mission as the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan:
“No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:13-16)
Through Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection, we are delivered from sin, death, and eternal separation from God. This promise of deliverance is for all who believe in Him, and it assures us of eternal life in His presence.
The Final Deliverance: Harvesting the Earth
The Bible ends with a powerful image of final deliverance in the Book of Revelation. In Revelation 14:14-18, we read about the harvest of the earth, where Jesus—symbolized as the Son of Man—reaps the harvest and gathers the righteous into His eternal kingdom:
“I looked, and there before me was a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, ‘Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.’ So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested. Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, ‘Take your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.’” (Revelation 14:14-18)
This vivid image reminds us that the ultimate deliverance is coming. When Jesus will return to gather His people into eternal life. This is the ultimate hope—a deliverance not just from earthly struggles, but from sin, death, and all evil.
Trusting in Jesus’ Deliverance
From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is the story of God’s deliverance. We can trust that God will deliver us just as He promised. We can find comfort and peace in knowing that His plans are trustworthy and faithful. Jesus, the Son of Man, is our ultimate Deliverer. When we place our faith in Him, repent of our sins, and trust in His work on the cross. We can be confident that we are saved.
As we face challenges in life, we can hold onto the truth that God’s deliverance is certain. And that one day, He will bring us into our eternal promised land. Just as He promised to Abraham, Israel, and all who trust in His Son, Jesus Christ.
You can trust Jesus to deliver you.
