Growing up in a tough neighborhood as the youngest of five with very little money, I learned early on how to protect myself. Survival meant being strong, guarded, and cautious. I could build emotional walls in an instant — and once they were up, no one got in.
For many years, that felt like safety. But is that what God truly wants for me?
No.
God’s Desire for a Soft Heart
Through Jesus Christ, God has given us the Holy Spirit — the One who fills our hearts with His love and changes the way we live. In Galatians 5:22–23, Scripture tells us:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
When my heart is hardened, I cannot experience these fruits of the Spirit. Instead, I live in isolation, fear, and anger. My guard stays up; emotions stay buried. I tell myself it’s safer that way — but it’s not living.
Jesus spoke about this in Matthew 13:15–16:
“For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them. But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.”
God created us with hearts meant to be open, tender, and alive.
When the Spirit Softens My Heart
When I allow the Holy Spirit to work in me, something beautiful happens. My heart softens, and with it comes peace and joy. The Spirit fills me with compassion — suddenly, I find it easier to love others and to enjoy being around them. My walls begin to fall, and I experience the warmth and gentleness I’ve been searching for all along.
It’s a wonderful transformation.
The Battle to Stay Tender
But if I’m being honest, it doesn’t take much for my heart to harden again. One harsh comment, one moment of rejection, and I’m back behind my emotional walls. My peace disappears, and I retreat into the old familiar place of self-protection.
Do you ever feel that way too?
If so, know that you’re not alone. I’ve learned that the only lasting remedy for a hardened heart is the Holy Spirit.
The Enemy Loves a Hardened Heart
Satan loves it when we close our hearts. A calloused heart gives him room to sow fear, resentment, and pride. When that happens, we turn away from God — not because we want to, but because we’re afraid to be hurt again.
If your heart has grown calloused, ask God to soften it. Pray for His Spirit to fill you with gentleness, kindness, and faithfulness. Let Him melt away your fear and restore your joy.
Living with a Soft Heart
When I surrender my heart to the Spirit’s control, everything changes. Life becomes lighter, relationships become richer, and joy flows freely. I stop living to protect myself and start living to love others.
It’s a daily battle, but it’s one worth fighting.
My prayer for you is this: that you, too, would experience the peace and joy that come from a heart softened by the Spirit. Joy is possible. It’s available to every one of us — if we simply open our hearts and let God in.
